Some History

  • Built in 1938 Colonial Edwardian in style, Jasper Valley House has been a home to many local families and their farming practices over the years. Originally built for a Dairy Farmer and since then, the house has grown with numerous expansions and additions to accommodate its growing  families. Significantly in the 70's the property transformed from a diary farm into a Winery & Vineyard. The owner then a Sidney Carlton Mitchell a well known local identity and a pioneer in his time, established Jasper Valley Wines, the first commercial Winery on the South Coast. Sid's Winemaker  took up residence in the house. (Note: Winery not presently trading)
  •  Two makes a team, Glynn a Carpenter and Nicky a Horticulturalist  over a 3 year period restored  the House to its former Edwardian glory, this included sympathetically reconstructing the interior of the later additions, to harmonise with the rest of the original house.
  •  Many classic  features of the  house survive, such as the internal lining boards to the walls and ceilings, cedar doors, Rimu strip floors and decorative timber cornices. The tall 11 foot ceilings are a giveaway to the original floor plan  and it's here where most of the beautiful features  are found.  In the 60's and 70's a period of expansion when verandahs were filled in to become rooms and then new verandahs were further built on. These modifications and additions were  basic and utilitarian in contrast to  the  rich early house and it's here a lot of recent  work has been done  to replace the mismatching styles,  with reproduction lining boards and timber cornices, befit of the original style. It's also here that new contemporary monotone bathrooms replaced the old.
  • Although the bones of the house are some 85 years old, integrating modern building technologies, conveniences and comforts sympathetically into it's  renovation was a priority.
  •  As you walk up the steps into Jasper Valley House you will be transported  back to an era of high ceilings, ornate timber work and rich colours but you won't be leaving behind any of life's luxuries.
